The project Twin Transition in Europe (TwinPaths) is dedicated to understanding the synergistic potential of green and digital technologies in fostering sustainable development across European regions. As global climate concerns and digital advancements converge, this research seeks to shed light on the intertwined dynamics of the green and digital transition, aiming to create sustainable, resilient economies that meet both environmental and technological challenges. The concept of the twin transition is increasingly gaining relevance in European policy, however, the interaction between green and digital technologies remains underexplored in scientific research. Current studies often examine green and digital transitions separately, leaving a gap in understanding their combined potential. Further, there is limited research on how regional factors and policy interventions impact the twin transition across European regions, which is crucial for ensuring stable growth. The project introduces a unique lens to analyze how green and digital transitions co-evolve, offering new insights into regional development and technological change.

Its primary goal is to model and simulate pathways for regional twin transition, exploring the effects of policy measures on technology adoption and innovation diffusion. By applying the "path perspective," the project deepens the understanding of how innovation and economic growth emerge and are shaped by regional dynamics. The project pioneers the use of agent-based modelling (ABM) to simulate the intertwined pathways of green and digital transitions. This innovative approach enables to explore how policies and regional characteristics drive these transitions, providing forward-looking guidance. The model is empirically grounded, allowing for detailed multi-scale analysis at the organizational, regional, and EU levels. The projects expected impact extends to industries, policymakers, and academia, providing tools and knowledge to navigate technological transitions, enhance environmental sustainability, and support inclusive economic growth.
