Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are key components of modern cybersecurity protection, as they detect attacks in modern computer networks. Nevertheless, their actual effectiveness remains difficult to measure, particularly under real-world operating conditions. The “StealthCup” methodology is a research and evaluation concept developed at AIT that is unique internationally; it enables realistic, multi-stage cyberattacks in a fully automated IT/OT cyber range. This approach lays the foundation for realistic and reproducible evaluations of intrusion detection systems (IDS) in large IT/OT systems.
AIT’s leadership role in the field of realistic IDS evaluation is evident in several clear indicators. The infrastructure was developed and validated in collaboration with infrastructure companies, demonstrating its relevance and practical applicability. The StealthCup offers a combination unique in Europe of a fully reproducible “Infrastructure as Code (IaC)”-based test environment and realistic attack patterns generated by human attackers. By providing independent, scientifically sound evaluation and testing capabilities, the AIT Center supports Europe’s ability to assess security-critical technologies in a transparent and evidence-based manner, thereby contributing to strengthening Europe’s capacity to evaluate modern detection systems under realistic conditions and to build robust defense mechanisms. StealthCup is aimed at European authorities, organizations, and manufacturers, particularly in the fields of detection engineering and personnel training.
