Ángel Losada Arias, scientist at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, presented the latest research findings on the safety of automated mobility at the 28th International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) 2026 in Toronto, Canada. The ESV is regarded as one of the world’s most important conferences in the field of vehicle safety and vehicle technologies. Under the theme ‘Advancing Innovation: Technologies for Safer Vehicles’, the event brought together leading representatives from research, industry, politics and public authorities to discuss current developments in the fields of vehicle safety, automated driving, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
On behalf of AIT, Ángel Losada Arias from the Center for Transport Technologies presented the peer-reviewed scientific paper “Machine Learning–Driven Safety Analysis of Automated Vehicles in Simulated Mixed Traffic Environments”, which was published in the prestigious SAE International Journal of Transportation Safety. Its inclusion in the peer-reviewed conference track underscores the high quality of the work and is a mark of special scientific recognition within the context of the conference.
The paper focuses on the question of how automated shuttle vehicles can be operated safely and efficiently alongside conventional vehicles in urban, multimodal transport environments. The work is based on an automated shuttle pilot project in Austria (as part of KASSA.AST) and combines real-world traffic data with microsimulations and AI-based analytical methods.
A key element of the research is the Mobility Observation Box developed at AIT. By combining the traffic data collected using this device with modern machine learning methods, important patterns in traffic behaviour have been identified that help to make automated mobility safer, smoother and more predictable.
The presentation met with great interest among the international conference participants. In particular, the technological capabilities of the Mobility Observation Box and the AIT’s practical research work were highlighted positively by representatives from North America, Europe and Asia. The AIT’s presence at the ESV conference increased its international visibility and, at the same time, highlighted the contribution of research to the development of safe automated mobility systems.
