AI Austria 2040: Envisioning the Future of AI in Europe

Vision Writing Workshop | Vienna

Discussions about Artificial Intelligence are currently dominated by developments in the United States and China. But what if Europe developed its own path - strengthening its technological sovereignty while creating AI that reflects European needs and priorities?

The European Commission foresight study The Futures of Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Europe’s R&I Ecosystem explores several possible futures for AI in 2040. One scenario, “Europe leads a unique AI revolution,” imagines Europe becoming a global AI leader through major investments in education and the development of new AI paradigms that prove both innovative and socially useful.

What would such a future mean for Austria?

In this workshop, we invite participants to imagine Austria in 2040 as part of a technologically sovereign Europe that has developed its own approach to AI. Through a facilitated vision-writing process, we will explore what this future could mean for Austrian research, businesses, public institutions and society—and what decisions and developments between today and 2040 could make it possible.

Rather than predicting what will happen, we will write visions of what could happen and use them to discuss Austria’s potential role in shaping Europe’s AI future.

No previous experience with foresight or creative writing is required. We welcome participants from research, technology, business, policy, education, the arts and civil society.
