How batteries made from plants can make Europe more independent: Sustainable alternatives to lithium and graphite in battery production

Lithium-ion batteries are essential for the energy transition, but their raw materials are limited and the supply chains are uncertain. Researchers and companies are therefore focusing on alternatives made from biomass – including wood, cotton and even lavender. These natural materials could not only reduce dependence on imports, but also improve the environmental footprint.

“This definitely has a future. But you also have to make sure that this production is economically sustainable,” says Marcus Jahn from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. But how suitable are such batteries for everyday use, and when could they replace conventional batteries?
