Two awards for AIT battery research

A major success for the Competence Unit Battery Technologies at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology: two recent scientific papers have received international recognition, underscoring the high relevance of research in the field of innovative battery technologies.

A team including AIT scientist Alexander Beutl received a “Certificate for Most Cited Article” for the publication “Round-robin test of all-solid-state battery with sulphide electrolyte assembly in coin-type cell configuration” (Alexander Beutl et al.). The paper addresses the reproducibility of sulphide-based solid-state batteries and highlights the importance of standardised methods for evaluating cell performance. The high citation rate underscores the international visibility and the influence of the results on the further development of solid-state batteries.

In addition, the paper “Insights into the chemical and electrochemical behaviour of halide and sulphide electrolytes in all-solid-state batteries” (Artur Tron, Alexander Beutl, Irshad Mohammad and Andrea Paolella) was awarded the Energy Advances Outstanding Paper Award 2025. The work provides important insights into the stability of electrolyte materials and presents innovative approaches to improving interfaces in solid-state batteries. Particular emphasis was placed on the practical approach to reducing undesirable reactions at lithium-metal interfaces, as well as the improvements achieved in various cell configurations.

For many years, AIT has been one of Europe’s leading research institutions in the field of modern battery technologies and is consistently expanding its activities in the area of solid-state batteries. The focus is on safe, long-lasting and high-performance next-generation all-solid-state batteries. With the new Solid State Battery Lab at its Vienna premises, AIT now has a state-of-the-art research infrastructure for the development and scaling of innovative battery concepts – from material development to industry-scale production of multi-layer pouch cells. The research covers polymer, sulphide, halide and ceramic electrolytes, as well as the stabilisation of critical interfaces between electrodes and electrolytes. The aim is to address key challenges such as safety, energy density, service life and reproducible production processes, thereby making a significant contribution to the sustainable mobility and energy transition. Furthermore, AIT is working with international partners on applications for electric mobility and future electric aviation concepts.

The awards recognise both the scientific excellence and the high practical relevance of the research. They make an important contribution to the development of safe and high-performance energy storage systems – a key component for the mobility and energy supply of the future.

These achievements once again confirm AIT’s strong position in the field of battery technologies and the international visibility of its research.
