Lightweight design is a key factor in achieving sustainable mobility for the future. Virtually all modes of transport benefit from it: from cars and buses to rail vehicles, aviation, and even space travel. Light metals in particular make a significant contribution – provided that circular economy, energy-efficient manufacturing, and reliable technologies are taken into account from the outset. The economy also benefits: lightweight design secures 77,400 jobs in Austria alone and generates €9.4 billion in added value. There are few technologies with a comparable impact.
This raises some exciting questions: What further economic and ecological potential does lightweight design offer, and how can the two be combined? How far has the use of lightweight construction progressed in mobility and aerospace? How significant are circular economy and energy-efficient manufacturing in practice? What opportunities, hurdles, and prospects exist? What does research say? How is Austria involved internationally? We want to discuss these and other questions in this forum.
