The Second Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change (AAR2) was officially published on 17 June 2025. The report is coordinated by the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) and serves as a scientific basis for climate policy at national and regional level.
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology was significantly involved in Chapter 4 "Provision of goods and services" and Chapter 8 "Transformation pathways", which deal with climate-resilient future pathways for Austria. Dr Gustav Resch and Dr Franziska Schöniger, experts in climate-resilient energy systems at the AIT, acted as coordinating lead authors. Further contributions came from AIT experts Dr Klaus Kubeczko, Tara Esterl, MSc, Christian Schützenhofer and Lukas Liebmann.
Chapter 4 sheds light on:
- The defossilisation of industry and the manufacturing sector
- Demand-side measures to reduce energy and resource consumption
- Additional investments to achieve net-zero emissions from energy use in transport, industry and buildings by 2040
Chapter 8 sheds light on:
- Technological options for decarbonising the energy system
- The importance of sufficiency, efficiency and governance innovations
- Ways to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, taking into account economic, social and environmental factors
With its multidisciplinary expertise, the AIT is making an important contribution to the evidence-based design of the energy transition in Austria.
