ISD 2011 - A new AIT technology platform

21.09.2011
Industrial Surveillance Day (ISD) @ AVSS 2011

On September 2nd the first Industrial Surveillance Day (ISD 2011) organized by AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and hosted by the Eight IEEE International Conference on Advanced Video and Signal-Based Surveillance (AVSS) took place at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Austria.

As the industrial chair Roman Pflugfelder (AIT Safety & Security Department) explained to the participants at the beginning of the event, the main focus of the symposium was to bring all stakeholders in the field of video surveillance together in one place - as technology platforms for industry, academia, public authorities and end users are essential for a better market development.

Well established scientific symposia such as the AVSS conference and the VS workshop series exist and industrial exhibitions and congresses such as IFSEC, ISC West and the VISION attract dozens of vision companies and hundreds of end users each year. These conferences and these congresses, however, currently coexist with loose contact. The intention of the ISD is exactly to build bridges among the academic, the governmental and the industrial world and to establish contact.

Exchange of scientific and technological knowledge as well as the exchange of knowledge concerning market demand will foster commercial solutions based on video and computational intelligence, still a very underdeveloped market. Immature vision solutions caused reservation of customers, but many companies and end users have been starting to realize the complexity of the cognitive aspects of Computer Vision technology in addition to the complexity of the design and the engineering. Such lead companies and lead users are now looking for new partnerships where this new symposium could help.

The first ISD offered a combined demo and networking session. 18 submissions were received in the form of extended abstracts from international companies and consortia - 15 were accepted. The spectrum of companies ranged from SMEs to multinational companies showing clearly the appeal of the ISD. Topics were diverse such as traffic monitoring, human surveillance, UAVs, benchmarking, new sensor technologies and system integration, which clearly showed the potential of the market.

The first ISD was a great success: IMGS-TA1 – a group of stakeholders within the surveillance field – colocated their regular meeting with the ISD. Invited speakers reported the newest developments in important areas such as border control, robust video analytics and traffic monitoring. And a panel discussion about questionable discrepancies between industrial and user perspectives rounded the exiting program. As the feedback of the participant afterwards showed the ISD symposium was highly appreciated and requested to go on in the future.
