Second European expert meeting for Patient Blood Management (PBM) in Lisbon

19.11.2015
A multidisciplinary team of hospitals from European countries discussed the European PBM Implementation Guide

The European Patient Blood Management (PBM) Implementation Guide was the topic of this second European expert meeting which took place from 6 to 7 November, 2015, hosted by the Hospital de Santa Maria - Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, Lisbon, Portugal.

The Hospital de Santa Maria - Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte is one of 5 European teaching hospitals of the PBM Project, launched by the Consumers, Health, Agriculture and Food Executive Agency (Chafea) to provide service to the European Commission DG SANTE.

The Meeting was organized by Peter Kastner and Helga Peinsold (Research Group Assistive Healthcare Information Technology, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology) in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Lucindo Ormonde and his local team from Hospital de Santa Maria.

What is Patient Blood Management about?
In the field of transfusion medicine, considerable investments and administrative efforts have been made to improve the safety of donor blood. However, measures and structural adjustments to broadly pre-empt and minimize blood usage have fallen short. In view of patient safety, increasing blood shortages, escalating costs and, above all, the mounting evidence on adverse outcome due to anaemia, blood loss and transfusion, change is warranted.

To close the gap between theory and clinical practice in the appropriate management of patients and to reduce the use of scarce donor blood, the European Commission has initiated a 30 month pilot program for the implementation of PBM in five European teaching hospitals.

The common vision of this endeavor is to sustainably establish PBM as the gold standard for patient care to improve patient safety and outcome.

Goals of the event

  • Identifying problems and challenges in the implementation of PBM in participating centers
  • Discussing solutions for the implementation of PBM in participating centers
  • Achieving agreement on the key elements of the proposed PBM implementation guide
  • Define criteria for PBM Reference Hospitals “PBM Centers of Excellence”

The selected teaching hospitals will lead the change effort and create a snowball effect supported by a jointly developed, evidence-based implementation guide.

Participating centres are:

  • Rigshospitalet / University Hospital Copenhagen
  • University Hospital Centre Zagreb
  • Hospital de Santa Maria - Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte
  • Medical University of Frankfurt
  • Medical University of Vienna / Vienna General Hospital
