AIT acquires WWTF project in the field of big data analytics for network security

05.07.2016
AIT’s proposal got the highest funding out of 10 accepted projects and was chosen out of 137 submitted proposals.

The AIT project Big-DAMA (Big Data Analytics for Network Traffic Monitoring and Analysis) was awarded at the yearly WWTF science gala dinner at the Wien Museum. Big-DAMA got the highest funding out of 10 accepted projects and was chosen out of 137 submitted proposals. As part of the event, opened by the Mayor of Vienna Dr. Michael Häupl and WWTF CEO Dr. Michael Stampfer, AIT expert Pedro Casas presented the winning project BigDAMA to Vienna’s research community and local authorities.

About Big-DAMA:

The complexity of the Internet has dramatically increased in the last few years, making it more important and challenging to design scalable Network Traffic Monitoring and Analysis applications and tools. Critical network traffic monitoring applications such as the detection of anomalies, network attacks and intrusions, require fast mechanisms for online analysis of thousands of events per second, as well as efficient techniques for offline analysis of massive historical data. The Big-DAMA project is conceiving novel scalable techniques and big-data frameworks capable to analyze both online network traffic data streams and offline massive traffic datasets. The team is exploring scalable online and offline data mining and machine learning-based techniques to monitor and characterize extremely large network traffic datasets. Big-DAMA will push forward big-data analysis technologies by building novel frameworks upon the most suitable tools for online and offline networking data processing

The Team around Big-DAMA:

  • Big-DAMA is a 3-years project funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF) through grant ICT15-129, “BigDAMA”, as well as by the other partner institutions (AIT Austrian Institute of Technology - Digital Safety & Security Department, Technische Universität Wien and Politecnico di Torino).
  • The project is lead by Dr. Pedro Casas (AIT), and the AIT team is complemented by Dr. Alessandro D'Alconzo as Senior Investigator. Prof. Tanja Zseby (Technische Universität Wien) and Prof. Marco Mellia (Politecnico di Torino) complement the core senior team of the project.
  • Big-DAMA has active collaboration with three top-level international research institutions participating as external partners: the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) in California, the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, and the Northwestern University in Chicago.
