The AIT is strengthening its international role in developing autonomous machines

New OSRA membership

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) has recently joined the OSRA (Open Source Robotics Alliance), a global association of leading companies and institutions in the field of robotics.

OSRA manages the Robot Operating System (ROS), an open software platform that has become the international standard for robot systems. This membership further consolidates AIT's leading position in the international development of autonomous robotic systems.

A central role is played by Christoph Fröhlich, an expert in the development of autonomous working machines at AIT. He represents AIT within the OSRA and, as a maintainer of the ros2_control project, makes a significant contribution to the further development of one of the most important open-source platforms in robotics. His work connects AIT with developers and decision-makers worldwide, ensuring that the latest technologies are seamlessly integrated into AIT’s projectsand that insights from these projects feed back into international developments.

AIT as a key player in global robotics

ROS is also used at AIT as an essential framework for autonomous machines such as the timber loading crane and the forklift truck in the  Large-Scale Robotics Lab. The platform forms the backbone for image processing, control technology, and seamless communication between system components.

Close cooperation within the open-source ecosystem enables AIT to provide optimal support to its industry partners:

  • Direct access to relevant communities allows changes and improvements to be initiated in a targeted and effective manner.
  • Extensive in-house technological expertise ensures that we can deliver end-to-end solutions – from designing tailor-made concepts to seamlessly integrating them.
  • Active participation in committees such as the OSRA Technical Governance Committee ensures that the interests of industry are effectively represented.

This makes AIT the first point of contact for companies looking to develop innovative, autonomous machines or update existing systems.
AIT's expertise is in demand worldwide and is constantly being developed in close collaboration with industry, research institutions and the international developer community.
