Seibersdorf Laboratories, a subsidiary of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, opened a new laboratory and production facility for innovative radiopharmaceuticals on 2 November 2026 – one of the largest production sites of its kind in Europe.

Radiopharmaceuticals are a key component of modern precision medicine. These medicines contain radioactive components and, depending on the formulation, enable precise diagnostic investigations or targeted therapeutic applications. They bind to specific structures within tumours, thereby making tumour sites visible and allowing them to be treated in a targeted manner – for example, in the case of prostate cancer. Such innovative medicines are developed and manufactured in Seibersdorf.

Precision cancer medicine from Seibersdorf – for Austria and the world

Seibersdorf Laboratories, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, has spent the last two years constructing a state-of-the-art laboratory and production facility for radiopharmaceuticals at the Tech Campus Seibersdorf. It is one of the largest production facilities of its kind in Europe. The new high-tech infrastructure expands capacity for the development and international contract manufacturing of innovative medicines for precise cancer diagnosis and targeted cancer therapy. This major investment, totalling 17 million euros, ensures the supply of medicines to patients in Austria. The high-quality products from Seibersdorf are also supplied to other European countries and overseas.

Grand opening attended by prominent politicians

The official opening took place on 2 November 2026 and was attended by prominent politicians from the federal and state governments.

Peter Hanke, Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure: “The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology makes a significant contribution to translating scientific excellence into tangible innovations and economic value creation. The new radiopharmaceuticals laboratory in Seibersdorf demonstrates how this expertise, in conjunction with highly specialised subsidiaries, is making an impact in a forward-looking field of medicine. This investment strengthens Austria’s position in the development and production of innovative radiopharmaceuticals, promotes the international competitiveness of our research and technology hub, and lays the groundwork for the medicine of the future.”

Christoph Kainz, Member of the Lower Austrian State Parliament, representing Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner: “Lower Austria is a strong hub for research, technology and innovation. The new radiopharmaceuticals laboratory in Seibersdorf is a striking example of how scientific expertise can be turned into concrete solutions for the medicine of tomorrow. This investment strengthens our position as a centre for business and technology, creates opportunities for highly qualified professionals and underlines Lower Austria’s importance as an internationally connected research and production hub. This benefits not only the region, but also patients far beyond the province’s borders.”

Alexander Svejkovsky, Managing Director of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology: “One of AIT’s key tasks is to translate scientific excellence into practical applications. Our subsidiary, Seibersdorf Laboratories, has a long history of highly successful collaboration with companies from industry, the pharmaceutical sector, research and public administration. By investing in the new laboratory and production building, we can further expand this successful collaboration. In this way, we enable our partners to enter a major field of the future and a future growth market.”

Markus Neumann, Managing Director of Seibersdorf Laboratories: “Seibersdorf Laboratories is a state-of-the-art facility with many years’ expertise in GMP production, radiochemistry and radiation protection. In our radiopharmacy laboratories and production facilities, we manufacture innovative medicines for cancer treatment to the highest quality and safety standards. The new radiopharmaceutical laboratory is crucial for expanding our capacity, meeting the growing global demand and ensuring the highest standard of care for patients.”

Development of manufacturing processes and analytical methods

With the construction of the new radiopharmaceutical laboratory, Seibersdorf Laboratories is strengthening its position as an international development and manufacturing partner for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The company develops manufacturing processes and analytical methods for radiopharmaceutical active substances and operates as a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO). Its clients include hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Current production will be gradually relocated to the significantly larger new laboratory. Production operations in the new building are scheduled to commence in 2028.

Accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment

Medicine is advancing at a rapid pace. In oncology in particular, radiopharmaceuticals are opening up new possibilities for diagnosing diseases more accurately and treating them in a more targeted manner.

On the one hand, there are diagnostic agents required by radiology departments for imaging procedures (such as PET scans) – for example, F18-FDG, a weakly radioactively labelled glucose that can be used to visualise metabolic processes.

On the other hand, therapeutics are being developed that act directly on the targeted part of the body without placing a significant burden on the rest of the body (precision medicine). These active substances consist of a radioactive nuclide and a chemical group (precursor) that binds with high precision to the tumour tissue. Many such therapeutics are currently undergoing clinical trials. As soon as marketing authorisation is granted by the health authorities, mass production can begin.

Prostate cancer is currently a key area of application. At 25 per cent, it is the most common form of cancer among men in Austria – over 65,000 people are currently affected. Radiopharmaceuticals are currently being produced in Seibersdorf for clinical trials. As the demand for new active substances and additional medical applications grows, so too does the need for specialised production partners. The new radiopharmaceutical laboratory is specifically geared towards scaling up the production of radiopharmaceuticals for the international market.

Ideal conditions at the Seibersdorf Tech Campus

The Seibersdorf Tech Campus offers ideal conditions for this: the company has decades of experience in handling radioactive substances, extensive expertise in radiation protection and in-depth regulatory know-how for pharmaceutical production in accordance with strict GMP quality standards. The team at Seibersdorf Laboratories comprises engineers, physicists and chemists with diverse specialisations, working together on an interdisciplinary basis. With its new infrastructure, the company combines this expertise with state-of-the-art technology, thereby helping to strengthen Austria as a centre for research and technology, as well as Europe’s innovation and manufacturing capabilities. This major investment follows a clear strategic focus on an international growth market.
