Cyber Security for Digital Systems

With the increasing digitalisation of industrial processes, there is a growing need for secure development approaches to minimise vulnerabilities right from the inception of IT systems (Security by Design). Traditional security measures usually only come into play after IT systems have been developed, meaning that potential vulnerabilities remain undetected and the risk of cyberattacks increases. Industrial companies in particular need effective methods to identify and close security gaps at an early stage. At the same time, international standards must be adhered to in order to ensure competitiveness in the global market.

Experts at the AIT Center for Digital Safety & Security have developed ThreatGet, a Security-by-Design development tool, which is a leading international innovative technology for sectors such as the automotive market and for shaping international standardisation for model-driven system development. To this end, successful collaborations have been established with Austrian industry partners such as LieberLieber, msg Plaut, and AVL, which makes a significant contribution to enhancing the global competitiveness of Austrian companies. The development was funded by EU funding programmes – primarily the EU’s Key Digital Technologies (KDT) programme and the European Defence Fund (EDF) – as well as nationally through the KIRAS and K-Pass security research programmes and via licensing agreements with industry partners.

“This partnership with AIT enables us to carry out Threat Analysis & Risk Assessment (TARA) analyses systematically and automatically. Combining AVL ThreatGet with our cyber security compliance management and testing solutions allows us to take a holistic approach to the entire process,” says Harald Petschnik, Business Innovation Manager at AVL. By integrating effective measures, the consequences of cyber-attacks on the privacy and health of road users can be drastically mitigated. “High levels of automation and seamless integration into our customers’ IT landscape are important to us, as this process may need to be run multiple times for many variants and throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle,” says Petschnik.

A new system can drastically mitigate the consequences of cyber attacks on the privacy and health of road users.

As a result, the Model-Driven Safety & Security by Design approach is now being further developed for additional market segments, including those outside the automotive sector. The offering is also being expanded to meet new requirements arising from the forthcoming EU Cyber Resilience Act and the EU Space Act. In parallel, AIT experts, in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Chancellery (BKA), are leading the “Cyber Resilience Act” working group within the CSP Cyber Security Platform Austria. In total, AIT holds around 50 patents in the field of cyber security.
