Solid State Battery Lab

The Solid State Battery Lab at AIT is a leading research and development infrastructure focussing on the further development of solid state batteries as a key technology for energy storage. The focus is on the processing of solid-state electrolytes, in particular polymer hybrid materials and sulphides, which have outstanding ionic conductivity and the potential to significantly increase the performance of modern battery systems. 

A key aim of the laboratory is to develop new classes of materials that are both powerful and scalable. Polymer-based hybrid electrolytes offer a promising compromise between high energy efficiency, industrial manufacturability and economic feasibility. The targeted optimisation of the electrolyte layers improves the stability and safety of the batteries, opening up new application possibilities, particularly in electromobility and stationary energy storage. 

The European technology roadmap shows a clear trend towards fourth-generation solid-state batteries, whose energy density could reach over 500Wh/kg – a decisive breakthrough for highperformance, safe and long-lasting energy storage systems. With its infrastructure, AIT is making a significant contribution to driving these developments forward. The combination of state-of-the-art production processes, high-precision analysis and testing methods and close collaboration with international research consortia makes it possible to develop innovations towards market maturity in a targeted manner. 

The AIT Solid State Battery Lab is an important hub within European battery research and uses its expertise to support the industry in implementing sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions. The lab‘s research results are essential for the further development of electromobility, renewable energy systems and future-proof storage concepts, which are crucial for the energy transition.
