Photonics & Quantum Communication Laboratory

The AIT Photonics & Quantum Communication Laboratory is dedicated to the development and integration of photonic and quantum optical technologies, which are essential for secure communication, sensor technology and high-precision signal processing. The infrastructure makes it possible to control and measure photonic integrated circuits at chip level and to demonstrate new applications for optical and electronic components. 

The research facility is equipped with a highly developed test station that enables the detailed characterisation of photonic chips. State-of-the-art instruments for optical and high-frequency signal generation and analysis are also available, enabling measurements across the entire spectrum from nanometres to terahertz. 

A particular focus is on quantum communication technologies, especially various implementations of quantum key distribution (QKD). These systems, including CV-, DV-, Entangled- and Measurement Device Independent (MDI)-QKD, contribute to the development of secure communication technologies that are resistant to future quantum computer attacks. The laboratory offers comprehensive testing and validation options for both “on-chip” and optical QKD systems. 

In addition, quantum random number generators and novel optical chips that set new standards in the security of communication systems and optical data processing are being researched. The combination of experimental research and system integration makes the Photonics & Quantum Communication Laboratory a central European test and development platform for future quantum and photonics technologies. 

With its high-performance research infrastructure, the laboratory makes a decisive contribution to the further development of photonic components for applications in telecommunications, quantum optics and sensor technology. This not only supports industrial innovation, but also strengthens Europe‘s leading position in the field of optical and quantum-based technologies.
