Increasing air traffic contributes significantly to global CO2 emissions, which is why sustainable solutions for aviation are urgently needed. Electrification of short- and medium-haul aircraft is a promising approach, but requires powerful, safe and lightweight battery storage systems. Conventional lithium-ion batteries are reaching their limits in terms of energy density, weight and safety. Innovative battery concepts that go beyond conventional storage technologies are needed to enable the efficient use of electric drives.
AIT has made significant progress with the development of structural solid-state batteries – with funding coming from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the European Union. In contrast to conventional batteries, these not only fulfil the function of energy storage, but are also an integral part of the aircraft structure. The electrolytic solid replaces the previous liquid electrolyte, which significantly improves safety. By integrating the battery cells into load-bearing aircraft components, for example in wings between carbon fibre layers, the additional weight can be minimised, and the specific energy density is doubled. This technology enables a greater range and more efficient utilisation of electric drives.
The results of AIT‘s research show that structural solid-state batteries enable a significant reduction in overall weight while simultaneously increasing storage capacity. The first demonstrators with a size of 60 x 40 cm, consisting of 20 AIT battery cells, prove the potential of this technology. AIT‘s technological leadership in this field has been confirmed by numerous successful research projects and positive feedback from international partners. Statements from partners such as “You are the best cell producers within Europe” illustrate the recognition of the high quality of the battery cells developed. In addition, a new laboratory infrastructure was opened in 2024 to enable the production and further development of solid-state batteries on a pilot scale.
With the ever-growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions, the AIT will continue to drive forward its research into structural solid-state batteries. One focus is on optimising integration into different transport systems and making the technology available for practical use in aviation and other areas of emission-free mobility. Close collaboration with leading industrial partners should accelerate the market entry of this revolutionary battery technology.
