City Intelligence Lab (CIL)

01.09.2026

The City Intelligence Lab (CIL) is an innovative research platform focussing on digital urban planning and resilient urban development. As part of the AIT Competence Unit Digital Resilient Cities, the lab offers state-of-the-art tools for the interactive and databased design of cities.

A key advantage of the CIL is its combination of real-time simulations, AI-supported analysis methods and parametric design, which enables urban planners, developers and decision-makers to develop sustainable urban solutions. The interactive infrastructure includes projection walls, analogue city models and augmented reality technologies that enable the intuitive and collaborative design of planning processes.

Particularly noteworthy is the AI-supported framework, which opens up extensive design possibilities through algorithmically supported simulations – such as the modelling of complex urban systems and their effects on various environmental, transport and energy parameters. This enables cities to make future-oriented decisions in order to tackle challenges such as climate change, urbanisation and sustainable energy supply in a targeted manner. The CIL has gained international recognition as an innovation platform for digital planning processes. The lab is actively involved in real urban development projects through regular showcase events and cooperation with local authorities, planning offices and the property industry. This not only promotes the practical application of its new technologies, but also strengthens its European position in the field of computer-aided urban planning.

With its unique combination of digital planning methods, AI and interactive design, the CIL makes a decisive contribution to the development of liveable, sustainable and resilient cities. The platform supports cities worldwide in adapting their infrastructure to future challenges and creating sustainable urban living spaces.
