Start-ups are a key driver of economic dynamism and technological transformation. They have high growth potential and, through innovative business models, products and services, provide fresh impetus for the economy. In order to provide reliable data on the development and challenges facing Austrian start-ups, the Austrian Start-up Monitor (ASM) has been compiled annually since 2018. This empirical study is carried out by AIT in collaboration with AustrianStartups and the WU Start-up Centre. The aim is to provide well-founded information for the start-up community, policymakers, research institutions and economic policy stakeholders, in order to enable the fact-based further development of the start-up ecosystem.
The Austrian Startup Monitor 2025 is based on a survey of 635 founders and CEOs. The current edition focuses on the analysis of key technologies. These technologies hold promise for numerous sectors, and their development is receiving increased support from European and Austrian policymakers. 71% of the startups surveyed are developing key technologies. The most frequently cited are artificial intelligence, followed by life sciences and biotech, energy and environmental technologies, advanced production technologies and robotics, as well as chips, electronic components, and systems.
Women account for 21% of founders, which is higher than in previous years. The number of startups primarily pursuing social and/or environmental goals continues to rise. Currently, 62% of all startups are classified as green or social startups.
The Austrian Startup Monitor serves as an important basis for decision-making for numerous economic and research policy stakeholders. Among others, the Austrian Business Agency uses the insights gained to inform its strategies for attracting international companies. The study is made possible through the support of key funding agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy, and Tourism; the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure; the Federal Ministry for Women, Science, and Research; the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber; the Austrian Research Promotion Agency; and Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
Thanks to its scientific foundation and comprehensive empirical approach, the ASM provides a solid basis for decision-making regarding policy measures and economic support strategies. It helps to specifically improve the framework conditions for startups, enhance the international competitiveness of Austrian companies, and create an innovation-friendly environment in the long term.
