DEDICATE 6G

Reliable low latency, i.e., dependable, wireless communication links are crucial for closing the control loop between mobile sensors and actuators. They will be the “central nervous system” for the digitization of transport and manufacturing processes and must be built in a way that minimizes their energy consumption. Dependable wireless communication systems will increase the reliability and reduce the operational cost of energy efficient public transport systems, e.g., by replacing cabled safety systems with wireless links. Advanced manufacturing processes will utilize dependable wireless communication systems for controlling human-robot and robot-robot interaction. These capabilities are the key to a competitive Austrian business location with improved digital autonomy for modern industrial companies.

Fifth generation (5G) systems promised a latency of 1ms for dependable communication links but failed to deliver. Sixth generation (6G) systems aim to realize this promise and even reach 100µs latency, which is necessary for time-sensitive applications in transport and industry. The scientific challenges for dependable wireless communication systems encompass all layers of a communication system. We will specifically focus on the physical layer, i.e., radio wave propagation and distributed baseband signal processing, since all higher layers will benefit.
