Decarbonisation of the Austrian pharmaceutical industry

The challenges on the way to achieving climate targets are particularly great for manufacturing companies. In a joint research project with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, four pharmaceutical companies at five locations - from Tyrol to Lower Austria and Vienna - are analysing their production processes in order to reduce CO2 emissions towards zero over the next few years.

The main objectives of the project are the development of detailed decarbonisation concepts for the participating companies and an industry guideline for the decarbonisation of Austrian pharmaceutical sites. In addition, a calculation tool is being developed for the industry that can also be used to identify decarbonisation measures for other sites.

To this end, efficiency measures for key technologies in the industry-specific energy supply (e.g. cleaning-in-place, clean steam generation and clean room air conditioning) will be developed, options for switching to renewable heating and cooling supplies will be identified and changes to the framework conditions required for complete economic decarbonisation will be identified beyond the system boundaries of the production sites.
