Tin sulfides as high-performance anode materials for Li-ion batteries

Optimization of process parameters and electrochemical properties

In the project, high purity tin sulfides are developed, which are characterized, investigated and tested on laboratory scale as new anode materials for Li-ion batteries to meet the requirements for battery materials.

Projectdescription

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) will continue to be the electrochemical storage medium of choice for electric vehicles in the future. Properties such as power density, energy density, capacity, cycle stability and cell life are decisive for the operation and performance of electric vehicles.

To improve cell properties and performance characteristics, new cathode, anode and electrolyte materials must be found. Due to their high reversible lithium storage capacities, tin sulfides are considered an attractive replacement for the carbon anodes currently on the market.

Frimeco currently has several tin sulfide powders in its product portfolio, but since these are used for brake pad production in the automotive industry, high purity levels are not required. However, before they can be marketed as electrode materials, they must meet the requirements for battery materials. Therefore, the TinSLIB project of AIT and Frimeco will jointly develop high purity tin sulfides, which will be characterized, investigated and tested on laboratory scale as new anode materials for LIB.
