COOKING IN VOLKSHILFE VIENNA

The Center for Vision, Automation & Control demonstrates social commitment

A commitment to social issues is an essential part of the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and especially of the Center for Vision, Automation & Control (VAC) at the AIT. Recently, its employees jointly decided to dedicate their support to Volkshilfe Wien's Nordlicht day centre and cook for 100 clients.

Volkshilfe Wien is a social service organisation that supports people in need. Through educational work, it endeavours to strengthen civil society by sensitising the population to the intersectionality of social challenges. By providing places to sleep and rooms to stay in emergency accommodation, it endeavours to meet the basic needs of people in precarious living situations.

At the Nordlicht day center, homeless people are offered hot meals all year round, which are prepared by volunteers. Our colleagues from VAC added Zurich-style sliced meat with rice and vegetables to the menu. An incredible 17,500 grams of turkey schnitzel, 5,000 grams of mushrooms, 10,000 grams of whipped cream and 25 onions were used. With 8,000 grams of rice, 6,000 grams of carrots and 6,000 grams of broccoli, the side dish was not neglected either.

It was a welcome change and an enriching experience for the team. In addition to the exchange with the clients and employees of the day centre, which led to a new level of empathy for those affected among all participants, cooking and eating together also brought the team closer together internally. It was an outing that not only filled stomachs, but also hearts.
