AIT researcher Vanessa Staderini wins IEEE & AIT Women in Engineering Best Paper Award

13.10.2023

At this year's International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS) in Vienna, Vanessa Staderini from the AIT Center for Vision, Automation & Control presented her research work in the field of automated optical 3D inspection. An independent international jury evaluated all submissions in a blind review process and awarded first place to the collaborative work of Vanessa Staderini and her colleagues.

In her award-winning paper "Spatial resolution metric for optimal viewpoints generation in visual inspection planning", Vanessa Staderini presents a new model-based approach for the automated generation of optimal camera poses for 3D inspection. She introduces a new formulation to ensure complete coverage and guarantee the desired spatial resolution, even for objects with complex shape and may self-occlusions. At the same time, the number of optimal viewpoints is deliberately kept low to limit inspection time. This is particularly important in manufacturing, where fast and accurate inline visual quality inspection is essential to save resources and energy.

Short cycle times, complex geometries, difficult surface textures and demanding production environments pose significant challenges to conventional inspection methods and makes automated systems that are high-performance, robust and capable of reliably detecting surface defects in demand. The Centre for Vision, Automation & Control has a special research focus in this area and provides innovative solutions for industry, which now also focuses on quality control by controlling production parameters. Vanessa Staderini is an important contributor in these developments.

IEEE & AIT Women in Engineering Award

The award was presented by IEEE Women in Engineering Austria (WIE). WIE is a volunteer-led network of women with an engineering background and is part of the global professional network of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). WIE's main objectives are to support, network and give visibility to female students and women in technical professions at different stages of their education and careers, in both academic and industrial settings. The aim of the award is to highlight and recognise the outstanding research achievements of women. The prize money for the award was provided by the Gender Office of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.
