AIT Partnership-Project EcoGrid EU awarded with the 2014 ISGAN Award of Excellence – Honorable Mention

15.05.2014

12.05.2014, Seoul, Korea –During the fifth Clean Energy Ministerial in Seoul, Korea, the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) and the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF) announced Entergy New Orleans, Inc.’s “SmartView” Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) pilot project as the winner of the first‐ever ISGAN Award of Excellence. ISGAN and GSGF also recognized the project EcoGrid EU, with the title “Honorable Mention”. The project EcoGrid EU, in which the AIT Energy Department participated, was already nominated in October 2012 within the best 10 projects for the Sustainia Award recompensating sustainable solutions around the world for their ability to drive positive change and elevate sustainable societies.

The objective of the EcoGrid EU project is to develop a prototype of a European Smart Grid market platform able to incorporate small-scale distributed energy resources as well as flexible demand into the existing power system markets, balancing tools and operation procedures. The key idea of the project is to introduce a real time market (close to operation) distributing a real time price on which distributed energy resources and flexible demand can react. The uniqueness of this project is its demonstration on the island of Bornholm with more than 1.500 participants having installed smart grids equipment into their private homes. It makes the island of Bornholm a showcase for world´s leading consumer engagement programs.

After a first phase of development and testing started in 2011, the project entered its demonstration phase during the last winter.

The main role of the AIT was to develop mechanisms to allow dispersed generation to contribute to the system balance and to the system operation. Another major contribution of AIT during the demonstration phase is the evaluation of the system performance on the basis of the smart meter data. By using complex data analyses, the AIT experts try to identify amount of demand response achieved in the pilot.

The AIT organizes on 20.05.2014 under the auspices of the project EcoGrid EU and the IEA DSM Task 17 a Workshop on Demand Side Management focusing on potentials, implementations and experiences. This workshop is organized in the frame of the smart grids week 2014 in Graz, Austria.
