Giefinggasse 4, 1210 Vienna

Field: Molecular Diagnostics

Main Research: DNA-based Engineering and Sensing

Experience: Dr. Barisic has profound experience in the fields of biotechnology and clinical microbiology. He has developed several novel DNA detection principles and diagnostic assays. To enable a smooth translation of this basic research into future applications and identify customer needs, close collaborations with medical centres were established. As a consequence, Dr. Barisic has also become an expert concerning human pathogens, antibiotic resistance and virulence factors. He initiated the H2020 project FAPIC (www.fapic.eu) based on his novel detection technologies. The goal of FAPIC is to develop a single diagnostic test for all clinically important pathogens (bacteria, viruses and fungi), antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factors. The diagnostic system will be evaluated in a clinical intervention study in university hospitals in Zagreb and Hasselt. In addition, Dr. Barisic initiated and coordinates the H2020 FETopen project MARA (www.maraproject.eu). The goal of this highly ambitious project is to develop three radically novel breakthrough technologies. The first technology concerns a novel sensor class aiming the design of autonomous detection oligonucleotides. Second, a directed design concept for artificial enzymes using DNA nanostructures such as DNA origami is being evaluated. Finally, these technologies should be combined to generate a DNA robot that can specifically identify cells and destroy them.
