Main Research: Power System Planning and Operation

Experience: Sohail Khan has been working at AIT, Energy department since 2013 in the Center of Energy, department of Electric Energy Systems. From 2013-2016 he worked in the Complex Energy Systems research group as PhD student. Where he modeled the flexibility provided by Distributed Energy Resources and controllable thermal loads. He contributed to geometric methods for assessment and allocation of operational flexibility in his dissertation. Since 2016, He is working as scientist and has been involved in number of EU projects. For instance in LEAFS project, he modeled energy storage systems coupled to residential PVs in four demonstration areas of Austria. He developed novel methods by which the distributed energy storage devices can contribute to grid by peak in-feed reduction while maximizing the storage system utilization. He was also involved in a customer project for developing home automation platform. Since Autumn 2017 he is involved in addressing the growing concern of European transmission system operators regarding reduction in inertia due to synchronous generators replaced with inverter interfaced generation. He is currently developing simulation platform to assess future scenarios of inertia reduction, inter-area oscillations and inverter induced stability concerns/advantages.
