5G & Broadband Technologies

5G will be the next revolutionary change for wireless communication systems. 5G system will support a diverse variety of usage scenarios in three different categories:

  • Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB): traditional uses cases for smartphone users but with increased peak data rate up to 20Gbps with support for high user densities.
  • Ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC): support of reliable machine-to-machine (M2M) communications with low latency of 1ms for wireless control loops to be used for coordinating autonomous vehicles or new production processes in Industry 4.0 factories.
  • Massive machine type communications (mMTC): support a very large number of devices with a relatively low volume of non-delay sensitive data. Devices are required to be low-cost and have a long battery life. Typical uses cases are Internet-of-Things (IoT) scenarios or sensor networks.

5G networks will require a strongly improved energy efficient by further reducing cell sizes as well as increasing spectral efficiency up to 30bps/Hz using massive MIMO systems. New spectral band will be enabled using millimeter wave frequencies above 28GHz requiring new chip designs and signal processing algorithms at the transmitter and receiver side.
