biotechnological workhorses and fascinating organisms
Filamentous fungi have multiple important functions in our ecosystem and in the global carbon cycle. Of them, ascomycetes of the genus Trichoderma are particularly interesting. Trichoderma reesei is a model organisms for plant cell wall degradation and highly relevant in industry as a producer of enzymes. These enzymes are important for biofuel and biogas production as well as for energy efficient chemical conversions. Hence, this fungus contributes to decarbonization and a more sustainable industry. However, other species of the genus are plant symbionts and protect important crops from devastating fungal diseases, an ecological function that becomes more and more important with a worldwide increasing population and the threat of increasing pollution with dangerous agrochemicals.
