Cybersecurity Lecture Series 2014

Cyber-Secure Control and Monitoring in Power Systems - Lecture by Prof. Sandberg

On Wednesday 30th April, Prof Henrik Sandberg from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden gave the cybersecurity lecture on the topic of cyber-secure control and monitoring in power systems.

In his lecture, Prof Sandberg introduced hypothetical attack scenarios that would enable an attacker to manipulate the measurements that are taken in a power grid without being detected by the systems that perform bad data detection. He discussed a security metric that can be used to measure the minimum number of signals an attacker must be able to manipulate, in order to remain undetected. This metric can be used as a benchmark for determining where security improvements should be made to make such attacks harder to implement. Furthermore, Prof Sandberg presented joint work undertaken with collaborators at ETH Zürich that investigated how manipulating the signals that form input to control algorithms, which are used to manage transmission systems in the power grid, could lead to instability. This research will be further explored, in relation to the control algorithms in the medium- and low-voltage regions, in a new smart grid security project, called SPARKS.

About Cybersecurity Lecture Series
