Crisis & Disaster Management

A networked understanding of the hazards and challenges of crisis and disaster situations is essential in order to protect employees, local residents, and the environment. The actions taken must involve the population and take preventative measures into account.

As growing quantities of data become available it becomes both increasingly important and challenging to establish a comprehensive and reliable overview of a situation based on an extremely diverse range of data sources. 

Against this background, AIT has established decades of experience in researching, developing and applying professional solutions in the field of Crisis & Disaster management. Its priorities lie in: 

  • (IoT-) Sensor Network-Management for point measurements (station), distance/area measurements (satellites, drones), and hybrid application scenarios such as environmental protection, climate change, and the detection of hazardous substances
  • Command & Control-Systems including interoperability between both civilian and civilian & military systems (dual use) with the goal of creating a common operational picture
  • Community Interaction & Engagement, involving volunteers in caring for refugees, or during flooding, for example

UWEDAT

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology has therefore developed the sensor solution UWEDAT as a robust but flexible high-performance system based on many years of operational experience, which is constantly being expanded with insights from our scientific work. As the only solution, UWEDAT strikes the balance between a stationary certified "fit for purpose" solution and a modern toolbox that is also open to other industries, other measurement hardware and the integration of surface data. For this reason, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is continuously working on the "hybridization" of UWEDAT measurement methods to benefit from mobile area sensor or satellite data.

EMIKAT

In order to protect the environment or, in the longer term, the climate, a sound and holistic analysis and moderation of emissions is required. While the focus was on industrial sources for years, today it is also increasingly necessary to consider private areas of life (e.g. energy consumption) and urban planning elements. In this context, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology has been working for years on the complete solution for national analysis and moderation of emissions, in particular in order to raise potential for improvement and to evaluate and compare possible measures.

CrowdTasker

Based on many years of research and development on the use of innovative information technologies for civil protection, AIT has implemented the CrowdTasker system in order to mobilize volunteers in a targeted manner and subsequently tailor-made tasks.
