Transport Optimisation & Energy Logistics

Passenger and freight transport are among the most important issues in the life of the 21st century. While we aim to maintain mobility and flexibility at a high level, we also strive to reduce negative effects such as CO2 emissions, noise, costs and (travel) time dependency. AIT's approach is to increase efficiency while minimizing costs and emissions.

Mobility is one of the fundamental prerequisites of modern societies and should not be restricted in its basic concept. Nevertheless, the question arises again and again whether certain routes are necessary at all. If this is the case, an attempt should nevertheless be made to keep the negative effects such as CO2 emissions, noise pollution and traffic chaos to a minimum. To achieve this, it is essential to take a holistic view of the transport system - from passenger transport to freight transport; from walking, cycling, car traffic and public transport to rail-bound transport, (inland) waterways and aviation. But also "emerging technologies" such as drones or hyperloops must not be ignored.

AIT's Transport Optimisation and Logistics (TOL) team develops new concepts, applications and methods to overcome the conflicting global objectives (maximising flexibility while minimising negative impacts). AIT's research approach consists of understanding the real challenge, scientifically modelling the underlying problem, designing tailor-made concepts, developing methods to provide a (numerical) solution, testing and evaluating the proposed approach in relation to predefined key performance indicators, and supporting the application and implementation of our solutions in the real environment. Different mobility solutions are taken into account. This includes passenger traffic as well as freight traffic but also operational issues, e.g. in fleet management. The range of diverse traffic technologies - from traditional to " future dreams " (cycling, car, truck, drone, hyperloop) - is always kept in mind. AIT's TOL team does not solve today's problems with yesterday's technology, but enables solutions that already meet the challenges of the coming years and decades.
