Improving Food Systems

The European Commission defines the Food Systems as the way food is produced and how it affects our health, wellbeing and the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), „microbiome research holds one of the keys to the intertwined goals of food system sustainability and healthy diets for all“.

Bioresources Unit has extensive experience in the development of microbial solutions for the improvement of primary production. Building upon this know-how, we are developing  microbial solutions and microbiome-based prediction models to improve post-harvest plant traits, e.g. storability or nutritional quality. In the longer term, our aim is to understand and further explore the links between environmental conditions, microbiomes, food quality and human health and thus enable new avenues in sustainable food production.

To our partners and customers, we offer customized and comprehensive microbiome studies exploring the correlations between the microbiome and the trait(s) of interest. Based on the collected data, we develop customized prediction tools for improved resource management that enable more sustainable production. Furthermore, we can explore our strain collection to find bioeffectors that confer a trait of interest and develop suitable application procedures based on our proprietary technologies.
