Active Mobility Innovations for Green and Safe City Solutions

To achieve CO2 neutrality, cities need to develop new, tailor-made energy concepts for urban transport that rely on emission-free and active forms of mobility. The acceptance of these sustainable mobility solutions depends crucially on them being inclusive, affordable and safe, as well as meeting the needs of the users.

Through co-creation activities and innovative digital tools, the European AMIGOS project will identify present and future mobility challenges for five cities (living labs – Hamburg, Gabrovo, Lappeenranta, Istanbul, Las Rozas) and ten urban areas (safety improvement areas – Hamburg, Gabrovo, Lappeenranta, Istanbul, Las Rozas, Jurmala, Bologna, Reykjavik, Nazareth, Ankara). The digital tools include AIT’s Mobility Observation Box and an application for the collection of new mobility data, which will feed a big data platform for their analysis and digital twins to visualize mobility scenarios. They will allow urban stakeholders to identify mobility challenges and will serve as a basis for the co-development of adapted mobility solutions: towards reducing traffic, increasing public and active mobility modes, improving safety and co-habitation between different mobilities for the five cities, and towards increased safety for the ten urban areas. Therefore, key stakeholders such as public authorities and vulnerable users will be involved in defining innovative mobility solutions to be implemented in the cities. Their environmental, safety, economic and social impacts will be assessed, in addition to their medium- and long-term impact and their replicability.

AIT will, among other activities, lead the impact assessment in AMIGOS, evaluating the proposed urban mobility solutions in terms of safety, environment, economy, society, and gender. Within this work, AIT will perform a before/after study for the ten safety improvement areas collecting real traffic data with the Mobility Observation Box (in ten cities across Europe).

Isabela Erdelean, mobility expert at AIT, explains: "Promoting active mobility and inclusive, safe, resilient and innovative urban mobility solutions plays a crucial role in achieving the sustainability goals of the European Green Deal. AMIGOS offers a unique opportunity for cities with different geographical, demographic and environmental characteristics to address their challenges and shape a safe, smart and climate-neutral future."
