HYPSAT – Hybrid Propulsion Concept for Small Air Transport

Civil aviation is a substantial source of emissions today, accounting for 12% of all transport-related emissions. Like surface transport, aviation is also undergoing a process of shifting from conventional fuel engines to more electric solutions, with the objective of increasing energy efficiency, thus reducing the overall environmental impact of the next generation of aircraft. Most unscheduled civil flight activity falls into the category of small aircraft (i.e. EASA CS-23 and below).

The primary objective of HYPSAT is to explore the design space for hybrid-electric powertrains enhanced by energy harvesting sub-systems for small air transport (SAT) applications based on real-world user demand and flight profiles for two reference aircraft belonging to the EASA CS-LSA/CS-VLA and CS-23-Light/CS-23 categories, respectively.

The secondary objective of this project is to cluster and bridge existing Austrian research competences on alternative powertrains with the most relevant partners of the aeronautic industry of the Alps-Adria-Danube region, with a special effort towards networking and generation of ideas to exploit in future cooperative actions. Such cooperation is intended to create a unique spot of excellence and a regional leadership in the upcoming market of hybrid electric small aircraft.
