Due to the increased usage of Smart Grid Technologies, an extensive ICT-Network is being created parallel to the electricity supply system. This ICT-Network is exposed to similar dangers as the regular Internet, due to its great extension and numerous users and access points.
Nevertheless, the overall electricity supply will be dependent on this ICT-System. Similar security problems, as we know them in the Internet of today, could lead to fatal consequences. Potential threats include energy theft by manipulating electricity meters, attacks on controlling elements of network operators in order to disrupt the company's working process as well as disconnecting the national electricity supply system over large areas, likely with a terroristic background. At the AIT, we are developing methods, concepts and software tools to minimize the risk of cyber threats and to extensively secure Austrian Smart Grids.
