Bavarian-Austrian advanced Welding wire Research and Innovation Action

The BAWeRIA project was funded by the INTERREG Programme Austria - Bavaria 2014-2020.

„From the melt to the finished welding wire“

Nowadays, the industrially used processes for producing welding wires include, by majority, the casting of the target alloy by means of a casting wheel (for example Properzi process) into a trapezoidal cross-section, followed by rolling processes including wire drawing, heat treatment, peeling and cleaning of the wire surface. BAWeRIA's vision is to carry out all core processes - from the melt to the finished wire rod - at a production site in the Upper Austria-Lower Bavaria assisted area.

After a one-year development phase, at the end of June 2017, the horizontal continuous casting plant (HCC) developed in the project was put into operation at the Light Metal Competence Center Ranshofen. The tailor-made plant technology was developed by employees of the LKR together with partner companies HPI (High performance Industrial Technology) and MIAGL.CO GmbH Germany. With the new HCC, the LKR establishes a globally new, highly flexible standard in welding wire development and production. The new HCC makes it possible, with the shortest possible delivery time and low costs, to produce semi-finished products made of special alloys especially for semi-industrial welding wire production be established. In the specially developed plant technology, the focus is on the further development of process technology for the production of high-quality, close to final dimensions formats, suitable for the immediate further processing of the semi-finished product produced without intermediate steps such as peeling.

The goal is to be able to integrate and dynamically operate all core processes from the melt to the finished wire. In addition to the recently modernized in-house vertical continuous casting technology (VCC) for magnesium and aluminum alloys, the new HCC completes the experimental portfolio. Both systems are targeted expansion of capacities and offer the great opportunity for the LKR to adequately address relevant market needs.
