S4ECoB aims to monitor and process sounds and noises for determination of occupancy to improve building energy management (BEM) and efficiency.The S4ECoB platform will integrate other existing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting (HVACL) systems. For instance, solid state lighting, heat exchange, photovoltaic plant or blind control will be integrated with other ICT-based subsystems (e.g. for security, protection, gas-detection, safety and comfort mainly). The control and management of automation and conditioning systems will be based on advanced algorithms. The platform will be capable of learning from previous operations and situations – by means of a semi-automatic process of retraining from repositories on Internet, which allows near-real time load-balancing and options for configuration, personalisation and adaptation to the characteristics of the building and the weather.S4ECoB will include low cost and energy-efficient audio and occupancy sensors in adaptable and scalable network architecture to public buildings and surroundings that can employ energy-harvesting techniques to power electronics devices such as LED lighting and actuators, variable speed motors and pumps. The S4ECoB will record and report the operations of control and quantify the energy savings, CO2 footprint reduction and calculate the return of investment (ROI) and pay-back time of the project.
