The aim of the research project is the development of an efficient rechargeable 3V magnesium battery. With an optimized metallic anode, a new kind of cathode and an improved non-aqueous electrolyte composition, this light-metal energy storage device will make a significant contribution to increasing the safety, performance and environmental compatibility of the next generation of batteries developed in Austria. The advantage of this concept is that this cell has a significantly higher energy density (up to 500 Wh / kg vs. 300 Wh / kg for Li) and is much more cost-effective (factor 24) in terms of the metal anode than conventional lithium-ion batteries.
