Innovative designs and acoustic long-term behaviour of noise barriers in consideration of environmental influences

Noise barriers are a widespread technical measure to reduce noise emissions from road and rail traffic. Although the harmonised European standard EN 14388 requires the specification of acoustic properties with regard to their long-term behaviour, no fundamental studies are currently available. Information on the damage caused by environmental influences is only available to a limited extent at present. The IBIS project investigated the use of innovative designs and materials on the one hand and the influence of ageing and environmental factors such as temperature fluctuations and humidity on the long-term acoustic behaviour of noise protection devices on the other.

This project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) within the programme Mobilität der Zukunft (Call 2013) of the FFG.
