In 2026 we no longer have to ask ourselves the question ‘Do we want AI in administration?’. Public administration should be able to use the advantages of AI as a matter of course, just like all other organizations do.
So, the question rather is, „What kind of AI do we want in public administration?’
This topic was the focus of AIT Senior Scientist Peter Biegelbauer in his keynote to the public administration experts at the Austrian Federal Administrative Academy, which is part of the Austrian Federal Chancellery. In its yearly educational planning conference, in the end of January, the education experts of all federal Austrian ministries are coming together to think about training and (digital) competences of civil servants.
The answer to the question of ‘what kind of AI do we want in public administration’? Ethical, legally compliant, economically and organisationally meaningful, sovereign, secure, and with human responsibility – that is how in the civil service should look like.
The public administration does not have to walk alone: the AI Factory Austria AI:AT offers Trustworthy AI solutions up to proof of concept, partners such as the AIT can offer its expertise thereafter.
