As part of the Healthy Online Information Spaces Conference organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on October 22, 2025, at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and the ACP Austria Center for Peace presented an important session on media freedom, responsibility, and technical innovation in the context of the PeaceTech Alliance.
Under the title “PeaceTech: What it Means for Media Freedom,” experts from the media, politics, and technology sectors discussed how technical systems and digital platforms can influence media freedom—both negatively and positively. One focus was on the topics of trust, ethics and inclusion in digital information spaces.
In small groups, participants discussed specific challenges and opportunities presented by PeaceTech and developed approaches for more transparent, inclusive, and democratically legitimate information spaces. The resulting feedback was incorporated into the creation of the new OSCE Guideline “Policy Manual on Safeguarding Media Freedom in the Age of Big Tech Platforms and AI.”
