Professor Stefano Passerini, Principal Scientist at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, is once again among the world's most cited scientists in 2025. This is confirmed by the current list of “Highly Cited Researchers” compiled by the data company Clarivate, which annually honors the most influential researchers worldwide.
“Highly Cited Researchers”: a sign of scientific excellence and influence
The current list, published in 2025, includes 7,131 researchers from 60 countries, including 54 scientists working in Austria. They represent the top 0.1 percent of the most cited researchers worldwide – a global seal of approval for scientific excellence.
The award is based on scientific publications from 2014 to 2024 that have been cited particularly frequently. These citations are considered an objective measure of the influence and relevance of scientific work within the international research community.
Stefano Passerini: at the forefront of sustainable battery research
Professor Passerini is one of the world's leading experts in the field of energy storage technologies. His research at AIT focuses on the development of sustainable high-performance batteries and supercapacitors manufactured using environmentally friendly materials and resource-efficient processes.
With nearly 800 scientific publications, a Scopus H-index of 130, and over 64,000 citations, Passerini is one of the most important researchers in his field.
International career with exemplary impact
In addition to his work at AIT, Stefano Passerini is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Previously, he was a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and director of the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU of KIT), and at La Sapienza University in Rome.
He is considered a pioneer in the fields of ionic liquids, polymer electrolytes, and sodium-ion batteries. He is also editor-in-chief of the Nature journal Watt and a fellow of the Electrochemical Society and the International Society of Electrochemistry.
