High-performance batteries are essential for the energy transition – whether in electromobility or in portable devices. China currently dominates the global battery market with over 70 percent, while Europe still has some catching up to do with 15 percent. In order to reduce its dependence on imports, Europe is increasingly focusing on its own research and innovation - also with support from Austria.
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is a key player in this area. In “Zeit im Bild” on February 2, Marcus Jahn, scientist in the “Battery Technologies” unit at AIT, provides insights into the latest developments. Future technologies such as solid-state batteries and sodium batteries are the focus of research. The aim is to develop sustainable and powerful batteries that will secure Europe's long-term competitiveness.
