Friederich Kupzog is new Head of Center for Energy

Since 1 January 2025 Friederich Kupzog has been Head of the Center for Energy. In this position he is responsible for the strategic and economic development of AIT's largest center.
 

Friederich Kupzog (45) has been Head of Center for Energy at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology with around 300 employees since 1 January 2025. In his new position, he is responsible for the strategic and economic development of the largest center at AIT. Kupzog came out on top as the best-qualified candidate in an international competition against numerous highly qualified national and international personalities. Friederich Kupzog has been working at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in the Center for Energy for twelve years and was most recently head of the Competence Unit "Power and Renewable Gas Systems".

Research areas of the Center for Energy

As Head of Center for Energy, Kupzog will continue to drive forward research and development in the areas of energy supply systems, sector coupling, industrial processes, urban planning, digital transformation and artificial intelligence in the energy domain. In these thematic areas, the further development of the research infrastructure and intensive networking with industry and the European scientific community are also of central importance for bringing innovations to the market. In his new role, Friederich Kupzog is thus making a significant contribution to the sustainable transformation of the energy sector and to Austria's innovation leadership in this field.

About the person

Born in Germany, he studied electrical engineering and information technology at RWTH Aachen University and completed his PhD at TU Wien in the field of smart grids. Friederich Kupzog has contributed his extensive expertise in the fields of energy and digitalisation in numerous positions at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.

In 2012, he began his career as a Senior Scientist at the Center for Energy, followed by positions as Thematic Coordinator and Head of Competence Unit "Power and Renewable Gas Systems", where he made pioneering contributions to innovative energy solutions. His research focuses include the digitalisation of energy systems and the development of verification methods for smart grid technologies. He is considered one of the pioneers in the development of smart grids and contributes his expertise to numerous national and international committees and networks.
