dHealth Conference 2023: The future of healthcare is digital

26.05.2023
THE meeting for industry, researchers and experts in the field of digital health took place on May 16-17, 2023, in Vienna, Austria

The dHealth Conference 2023 took place on May 16 and 17 in the Apothecary Wing of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. The annual international conference brings together healthcare experts, innovation drivers and researchers to discuss the latest trends and innovations in digital health. The 300 participants were part of stimulating discussions, exchanged ideas and had the opportunity to expand their network with first-class cooperation partners. At this year's dHealth conference, participants were introduced to the latest innovations and developments in digital health that have the potential to change the medical landscape for good.

Brigitte Zarfl from the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, spoke the opening words after the welcome by the chair of the conference Günter Schreier, as well as the organizing partners, Elke Guenther, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, and Bernhard Pfeiffer, UMIT Tirol. Followed by the first keynote on the topic - European Health Data Space - by Nikolaus Forgó in which he pointedly discussed the planned Health Data Space from a legal perspective.

Numerous presentations by leading experts and industry representatives formed the top-class program of the two days. Digital health topics ranged from AI-based diagnostic tools that help doctors make more accurate and faster diagnoses, to the new evolutionary stage of ELGA architecture, to wearable devices that collect and analyze health data in real time - these developments promise to improve patient care.

The highlights of dHealth 2023

The keynotes provided the scientific highlights with the international perspective on digital health from the World Health Organization, by David Novillo Ortiz, and Digital P4 Medicine, by Martin Widschwendter. As well as the tribute to Werner Leodolter, a pioneer of the Austrian digital health community, who tragically passed away far too early last year.

A special experience was the live performance of the music therapists of the EU project "ProMiMiC: Professional Excellence in Meaningful Music in Healthcare", a cooperation between AKH Vienna and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, at the event. It provided immediate emotions and impressively combined science with the power of music to improve the well-being of patients and staff, or in this case that of the conference participants. The event was rounded off, as every year, by the traditional Heurigen visit to the 10er Marie, where culinary and networking opportunities are excellent.

Once again this year, the coveted scientific awards were presented. Due to the high quality of the excellent submissions it was a close race, the winners were:

  • Best Master Paper, winner: Raffael Lukas KORNTHEUER with "Transforming Documents of the Austrian Nationwide EHR System into the OMOP CDM".
  • Best PhD Paper, winner: Esther Sohphie DORÉ with "Research Report: Exploring Needs, Impediments and Perspectives for a Digital Mental Health Tool in Psychiatric Settings".
  • Best Poster, Winner: Oliver JUNG, Eva HOLLAUF, Veronika HORNUNG-PRÄHAUSER, Tess DEN UYL and Kasper VAN ZON with "Promoting Healthy Aging Using a Robot Support System and Emotion Recognition".

A Success Story

Since 2007, the dHealth conference series, formerly the eHealth Conference, has attracted more than 300 participants from academia, industry, the public sector, and the healthcare sector. Under the motto "Health Informatics meets digital health", the event provides a platform for researchers, experts, decision-makers and providers to discuss innovative health informatics and dHealth solutions. The focus is on improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare. Here, research and application meet at eye level to present new findings from a scientific and practical perspective.
