IEEE Women in Engineering Award 2020

20.10.2020

Nicole Brosch, scientist at the research group High-Performance Vision Systems at the Center for Vision, Automation & Control is the co-founder of the Austria Section of the WIE - IEEE Women in Engineering. She has been leading the initiative since 2017. Together with her colleagues she organises several activities such as lectures and paper awards at conferences (mainly for students) in order to connect and promote female scientists and engineers.

This year the IEEE Women in Engineering Best Student Paper Award 2020 recognizes the best paper submitted by a female student. The paper "Towards Identification of Incorrectly Segmented OCT Scans" by Verena Renner (TU Vienna, Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group)  contributes to the identification of incorrectly segmented OCT images, simplifies the subsequent automatic evaluation of these images and is an exciting topic for further research. On 28 October 2020, Verena will receive the prize at an online event.

Nicole Brosch commits herself to the cause with passion and personal dedication. "Our aim as scientists and technicians is to support women at different levels of technical education or professional careers to connect internationally and to be more visible in scientific communities", she says. The Gender and Diversity Department of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology also supports the WIE - IEEE Women in Engineering activities and sponsors the award.
