AIT project "GrazLog" wins HERMES 2019 Transport Logistics Prize

29.04.2019

On Friday, 27 April, the "GrazLog" project submitted by the City of Graz and managed by the AIT was awarded the HERMES 2019 Transport Logistics Prize in the sustainability category.

AIT project manager Martin Reinthaler together with representatives of the city of Graz and other project partners received the award from the German Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer, State Secretary Karoline Edtstadler, WKÖ chairman Alexander Klacska and others at a gala ceremony in the Vienna Hofburg.

"The HERMES Transport Logistics Award is a great honour for our project and shows that our work for efficient and sustainable city logistics is very valuable," said Reinthaler, logistics expert at the AIT Center for Mobility Systems.

GrazLog: Cooperatively used inner-city logistics hubs

A heavily parked inner city, numerous trucks of various sizes with small delivery quantities - this familiar form of goods delivery in cities causes congestion on the roads, considerable pollution and noise, high energy consumption and, last but not least, increased transport costs. To make the last mile of delivery more environmentally friendly and also cheaper is the aim of the GrazLog project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit).

A municipal logistics centre, a so-called City Hub, will be installed, in which the delivery and handling of goods as well as the collection of returns will be handled in one. The delivery and collection takes place within an agreed time window in the course of a digitally optimised route planning, which is carried out for the first time from one source for all transport service providers involved. In addition, additional service offers such as parcel boxes or parcel delivery at the hub are to be tested.

Environmentally friendly vehicles such as freight bicycles or electric vehicles will be used for "last mile transport". Optimised land use and a neutral operator structure are further advantages of this pilot project, which is unique in Austria.
