This year’s Vienna Research Festival from September 11th to 14th attracted more than 11.000 visitors, who had the opportunity to explore research exhibits by Viennese universities, industry and research institutions.

The business unit Dynamic Transportation Systems from the AIT Mobility Department presented their research smartphone-based mobility data acquisition („Shake Your Way“) and novel expert-based bicycle routing („Wo Radelt Wien?“) in an interactive manner.

Description of exhibit „Shake Your Way“: There are many ways to improve traffic in cities like Vienna. To this end, detailled information about the individual mobility behaviour of the population, including trip purposes and used means of transport, is required. The procedure for collecting such information in a traditional way by providing questionnaires to selected respondents is time-consuming, often inaccurate and expensive. At this exhibit, visitors could playfully experience how smartphones can be used to automatically collect such information on taken trips and used means of transport.

Description of exhibit “Wo Radelt Wien?“: Our prefered cycling routes are influenced by a wide variety of different factors, including cycle path design, potholes, unclear and dangerous situation as well as trees providing shadow during hot summer days and a gernerally nice quiet environment. “Wo radelt Wien?” demonstrates an approach developed at AIT Mobility, which uses GPS records from cyclists to calculate cycling paths, which meets cyclists requirements. Visitors were invited to explore their favourite routes using an interactive routing application and provide feedback for future research.
