Hartmut Popp, AIT Mobility, Electric Drive Technologies, receives award for Master Thesis "Influence of vehicle-to-grid application on the aging of lithium ion batteries"

Within the project GeoGreen, which was realized in cooperation with the AIT Mobility and Energy Department, Hartmut Popp, AIT Mobility, Electric Drive Technologies, completed his Master Thesis on "Influence of vehicle-to-grid application on the aging of lithium ion batteries" in November 2014. As part of "Austria’s Energy Congress 2014", his Master Thesis was presented and has been awarded with the "Austria’s Energy Award for technical-scientific Researchers".

The projekt GeoGreen addressed the integration and optimization of flexible loads to increase the percentage of renewable energy. The utilization of electric vehicles was an essential aspect to simulate temporal, as well as, spatial power shifting.

The Master Thesis focuses on the ageing of lithium ion batteries during their application in a plug in (hybrid) electric vehicle, especially, with the additional influence of vehicle to grid application and the economical costs arising per kilowatt hour for the vehicle owner through this application. Furthermore, load profiles and battery types were identified for an optimum utilization.
